IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a treatment that targets surface level pigment that occurs as a result of sun exposure like freckles and sun spots. Although melasma also appears as dark pigment and is related to sun/heat, the pigment is too deep for IPL to target. In fact, IPL can cause a temporary worsening of melasma, though the darkening typically resolves in a few days. Chemical Peels can help with sun spots, but where they really shine is hyperpigmentation (skin darkening) related to inflammation, like acne and dry skin. Having a Chemical Peel after IPL can boost the IPL results and get any post inflammatory pigment that the IPL can't.
